The very best of these 'factories' are recognised by Vietnamese people and they enjoy national recognition for their handiwork. Everything from firecrackers to silk paintings, woodcarvings to ceramics, and puppets to pottery are made in these locations and can make unique gifts for friends and family back home, or as an exotic reminder of your trip to Vietnam. When paying a visit you can chat with these artisans and even try the handiwork yourself.
Mai Chau is located in Hoa Binh province, approximately 135 km from Hanoi and 60 km from Hoa Binh. From the top of Cun Mountain, one can admire the superb panorama of Mai Chau surrounded by a green valley and stilt houses. Many minorities, including the Thai ethnic group, live in Mai Chau.
Stilt houses border both sides of the roads. The houses are quite large with palm leaf roofs and polished bamboo-slat floors. The kitchen is located in the centre of the house. It is here that the cooking occurs, as well as the making of the colorful tho cam - the material used by Thai minority to make their clothes. The windows are large and decorated with patterns. Each house also has a pond to breed fish.

Hanoi - Mai Chau - Song Da Hydro Power
Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau (L, D)
In the morning you will be picked up at your hotel and you will visit Ho Chi Minh complex including HCM Mausoleum, Museum, Presidential Palace, One Pillar Pagoda then proceed to Quan Thanh Temple, West Lake, Tran Quoc pagoda, Temple of Literature and the Fine Arts Museum.
In the afternoon you will depart to Mai Chau where majority of the hite Thai ethnic minority livies. Upon arrival, you will check in at White Thai Stilt House and have dinner. The rest of the day is free for leisure. Try taking part in a traditional Thai music & dance show at night. Your overnight stay will be in Lac or Pamcoong Village Mai Chau.
Day 2: Mai Chau - Song Da Hydro Power - Hanoi (B, L)
After breakfast with a local Thai family where you were staying, you will take a short hike around Lac, Pamcoong, Van villages, and the local markets before having lunch. You will also visit Song Da Hydro Power on the way back to Hanoi.
